This is not simply about encouraging you to return to the salon more frequently. It is about achieving a controlled, even lift while protecting the condition of your hair.
Once your regrowth becomes too long, a bleach root application becomes significantly more complicated. It can require additional time and product, and there is a greater risk of banding or an uneven result.
What Happens When Bleached Roots Grow Out?
Your scalp naturally produces heat. This warmth accelerates the lightening process, which means the hair closest to your scalp can lift faster than the hair further along the regrowth. When the regrowth is short and consistent, an experienced colourist can manage this process and achieve a more even result.
If the regrowth becomes longer, the colourist is working with different processing zones:
- The hair closest to the scalp receives the most heat
- The regrowth further away receives less heat
- The previously bleached hair must be carefully protected from overlapping
- These areas can lighten at different speeds, even though they are part of the same section of hair.
What Are Hot Roots?
“Hot roots” describe roots that have processed faster or appeared brighter than the surrounding hair.
This happens because the warmth from the scalp accelerates the action of the lightener. When regrowth is too long for a straightforward root application, the section closest to the scalp may reach the desired blonde before the cooler area further down.
The result can be a visible difference between the two areas.
What Is Colour Banding?
Banding is a visible line or strip of uneven colour within the hair. With blonde hair, one area may appear warmer, darker or lighter than the sections above and below it.
Banding can occur when:
- Bleach processes unevenly across long regrowth
- A previous root application has lifted inconsistently
- Lightener overlaps onto already bleached hair

When your regrowth grows beyond the ideal root area, we cannot always apply the bleach to the whole section at once. At DKUK, we may need to start with the regrowth furthest from the scalp, then go back and apply bleach closer to the root, where the natural heat from your head causes it to lift more quickly.
This takes us longer and requires a lot more care and precision. We also need to avoid overlapping fresh bleach onto hair that has already been lightened, as repeated overlap can leave it dry, weakened and more likely to break.
